Before joining The Cadets Brass Staff in 2012, Justis MacKenzie marched with the Crossmen in 2007 and 2009 and Carolina Crown in 2010.

He received his Bachelor of Music degree with a Performer's Certificate in Tuba Performance from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y. While at Eastman, Justis had the pleasure of performing with the Emmy-winning Eastman Wind Ensemble and the internationally-acclaimed Eastman Trombone Choir. His more recent engagements include regular performances with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra as well as the Southern Tier Symphony, for which he serves as Principal Tuba.

In 2012, Justis was awarded the coveted Tuba Fellowship at the Aspen Music Festival. He is active in the Houston recording scene and enjoys laying down backing tracks on tuba and trombone for artists from all over the country. He also enjoys gigging regularly with his soul cover band, DNA & The Midnight Groove.

As a music arranger, Justis has written for ensembles all over the country, including the nation's leading conservatories and music schools. His arrangements have been accepted by the Eastman Wind Ensemble, the University of Michigan, the Center City Brass Quintet, the Interlochen Arts Academy and many more. He currently resides in Houston, where he is pursuing a Master of Music degree at Rice University. When he's not practicing, performing or writing, Justis can be found exploring the wonders of Texas barbecue and talking sports with anyone who will listen.
